Purpose and application of some reading pages is unclear, such as sentence-level and paragraph analysis. Sometimes with the open book library I am afraid of students scrolling too fast, or not going far enough, and missing important content. Instead, we'll spend class time looking at our specific library interface. It can be used in a variety of ways; it has excellent modular stucture. While the gray level might be lowered (in the update) for improved contrast—the true-black, bulleted, bolded key-terms are easy to perceive/read. For instance, without adopting the entire text, I still could pull the instructions for the Anti-Thesis essay or the Annotated Bibliography, or I could use the explanation of the purpose of collaboration. Though sources are acknowledged, footnotes rather than a Works Cited may have been more appropriate for navigation. Opening with an emphasis on the essential relationship between reading and writing and on the importance of building strong reading skills, the book proceeds in a logical order to cover the rationale for writing about texts in a college environment (and, subsequently, the workplace) and then provides strategies for doing so, definitely geared to an entry-level college student. I do not feel like it will become obsolete any time soon. There are also hyperlinks to help readers move to relevant information in other chapters. Since this book is used at a community college with students of varying ages, from students still in high school to students eligible for AARP membership, this book serves our population well. The prose seems clear, cogent, thoughtful, well-written; it generally uses solid grammar, mechanics, and punctuation. MLA formatting for works cited pages is up to date, and even addresses the fact that the format for citation changes regularly and points to appropriate resources outside of the text.
